The sophistication of Buntal Straw
At Emporio MP, we value the art of the handmade and the beauty that is born from nature. That is why in some of our creations we use Buntal straw, a noble and rare fiber, known for its soft luster, lightness, and durability.
Originating from the Philippines, Buntal straw is artisanally extracted from the leaves of the buri palm, a tropical tree with an imposing trunk and abundant foliage. This process begins with the manual harvesting of the leaves, from which the internal fibers are removed with extreme delicacy, respecting the natural cycle of the plant.
The thread that transforms into art
After extraction, the fibers go through a washing and sun-drying stage, either maintaining their natural color or being dyed by hand. They are then carefully separated and prepared for weaving.
The Buntal weave is made with threads stretched by hand on traditional looms, operated by experienced artisans. Each thread is precisely positioned, creating uniform, firm, and visually elegant weaves. This meticulous work is done with simple tools or manual equipment, where the straw begins to take shape and texture.
The result is panels of woven straw with a sophisticated finish, which are later shaped into bags with an authorial design, quality linings, and carefully chosen details to combine beauty and functionality.
